How to Choose, Use, and Cleanse Your Mala Beads

Mala beads are a powerful tool for meditation. They help us stay focused, calm, and relaxed during our practice. The best way to choose your mala is by considering what you want the mala to do for you. Are your intentions focused on balance, strength, healing, and protection? Are they inspired by clarity, confidence, or love? Once you know what you want them for, you will know what type of mala would work best for your needs. Read on to learn more about how you can choose, use and cleanse your mala beads.

Tips for Choosing Mala Beads

If you are new to malas, here are some tips on how to choose your Mala beads.

Consider Your Intentions

When choosing malas, it is important to consider your intention. The beads represent the elements of mind, body, and spirit that make up a person. The following are some common intentions for mala beads:
Balance—This includes all aspects of your life, such as work, family, and personal time. When you wear a mala with this intention, you may choose to make it out of Jasper. These materials can help balance your chakras by bringing them into alignment with one another.
Strength—The power of malas made with Lava is thought to be particularly strong when used for this purpose.
Healing -For healing purposes, it's best to find a mala that has healing stones embedded into the string of beads such as amethyst. These stones have healing properties that will help clear negativity from your energy field and bring about healing energy into your life.
Protection - Protection is another popular intent when choosing mala beads. In order to enhance this protection energy in your life, look for a mala with black onyx.
Inspiration—Beads made from hematite are thought to inspire creativity and self-love when worn as a mala by people who need extra motivation in their lives.
Clarity—Malas that contain clear quartz or other stones with clarity properties can help calm anxiety or stress while promoting inner peace

Choose the Material of the Beads

Mala beads are made from many different materials including wood, stone, and metal. Each type of material has its own qualities that can enhance your practice.
Wood beads are very porous so they absorb oils from your hands and skin which can cause them to darken over time. Wood also tends to be heavier than other materials so it may be uncomfortable if you wear it on the wrist for long periods of time.
Stone beads are very dense which makes them heavy when worn on the wrist for long periods. But, they do not absorb oils from your hands or skin like wood does which makes them easier to cleanse after use. It is a good choice if you want something simple but effective.
You can also find malas with larger beads or smaller beads depending on your preference.

Pick a Design

The next thing you'll want to consider is how your mala will look when completed. Malas are constructed in different ways from the number of beads, the spacers used and the guru head among others, which will impact the overall appearance. Do you want something simple or ornate? If so, this may affect how much you spend on the beads themselves as more elaborate beads cost more than plainer ones. Most malas are made with 108 beads, though there are some that have as few as 36 or as many as 300.

How to Use Your Mala Beads

Mala Beads

There are many different ways to use a mala. You can wear it around your neck or carry it in your pocket, or even use it as an ornament on your altar or as a decorative element in your home. You can also use it for performing mantras and chanting mantras that you prefer. You can follow the following steps:
1. Sit comfortably, with your back straight and eyes closed.
2. Hold the mala in both hands and recite the mantra silently while moving the beads down over each thumb joint, knuckle joint, then over each finger joint. Repeat this process until all the beads have been moved down over your fingers at least once.
3. After completing this process once, recite another round of mantras while moving the beads again over each thumb joint, knuckle joint, and finger joint until they return to their starting position on top of your thumbs again

Cleansing Your Mala Beads

Cleansing mala beads

Cleaning your beads is an important part of keeping them in good condition and ensuring that you can use them for a long time. Taking care of your beads is also a way to show respect for the sacredness of the mala process.
If you want to use your mala for meditation, then it is important that you cleanse it regularly to remove negative energy so that it does not interfere with your practice.
There are many ways to cleanse your mala beads. You can use salt water, washing soda, or sea salt. Some people also consider sage smoke cleansing.
It is recommended to use sea salt or kosher salt if possible. They are natural and will not damage your beads or leave any residue behind when you rinse away the salt. If you don't have any on hand, table salt will work too.
Rinse your mala beads in the above solutions and leave them overnight to allow any impurities or negative energy to leave the bead.
